Corporate D-Day

Posted: March 15, 2007 in Uncategorized

Layoff rounds are always weird in corporate offices in small towns. They’re even weirder when the corporate office is one of the many offices globally dropping the axe. People tend to get very comfortable in good jobs, even moreso when it’s the best gig in town, so being walked out, or just hearing of people who are suddenly gone, gets put up on the level of combat casualties. Reports trickle in: 5 people lost here, 2 people there, and every so often, a whole squad or field HQ takes a direct hit. The ranks take strategically planned acceptable losses for the war on stock devaluation.

Despite a flimsy attempt to keep the day under wraps, everyone has been waiting for today for the past couple weeks at least, and the rumor mill has been churning at top speed since yesterday. The greeting for the day has become, “Hey there, you’re still here.” The pat reply: “The day’s not over yet.”
