All the Japanese shorties know I gots game

Apart from some small kinks here and there, the work part of the trip is finished. We pulled 10-12 hour days all weekend and up until Tuesday, but it’s all finished, and just in time to get in some wrap-up partying before packing it in and getting on the plane tomorrow.

Last night was one of the two wrap-up parties, and the completion of my last remaining goal in Tokyo: going to a Tokyo karaoke bar with lots of drunk people and singing very very badly. We started in a civilized-enough setting, a restaurant where you left your shoes at the door and sat on tatami mats around a very nicely decorated table while attractive waitresses brought us things like whole grilled prawns and cheese cubes in fish entrails. However a good helping of plum wine, sake, and sochu, we were making the Japanese equivalent of a scene in no time, so we wrapped it up and headed over to the karaoke bar, which was in the very well-planned location of a concrete-reinforced basement.

On entering, the place looked a bit like a movie theater, manned by a single employee sitting behind a register and concession stand, wearing the look of someone who’s paid to listen to off-key singing all night. He ushered us into a small room with bench seating and a table, and a TV at one end. Scattered across the table were thick song catalogs, unfortunately none of them in English, and a bulky LCD remote that allowed you to select songs. Fortunately, this had an English option, and we proceeded to butcher everything from Elvis to Queen. I myself belted out renditions of a number of songs including New York New York, It’s Not Unusual, Take It Easy, and even a stirring duet of Sex Machine by James Brown. Needless to say, I was drinking the whole time.

Some final wrapups to do today, then one more parting dinner, and I’m leaving Tokyo in my wake, content in the fact that not only have I experienced all of Tokyo that I intended, but that Tokyo has probably experienced all of me that it can take.
