So deliciously evil

My day is off to a very evil start. Having checked my mail and grabbed a cup of our office’s very evil coffee, I start rebuilding a system when one of the agents comes over. Just yesterday this agent had approached me about a RAID card on one of their test systems that was emitting a constant beeping. I pinged support about it and sent him some solutions, all of which pointed to a pretty straightforward array misconfiguration or drive failure. Now, he stands at my cube, looking very sheepish, and says to me, “You want the story we’re sticking to, or the bottom line?”

This is gonna be good.

Apparently, this system has traded hands halfway through setup several times, beeping away, but never addressed. However, the latest person to take over had finally had enough of the beeping, and decided to do something about it. Now, for most, with a rather spendy piece of hardware with an identifiable problem and a valid warrantee, a call to the vendor is a no-brainer. Not this person though, oh no. There’s clearly a better solution here, and calling support is simply showing a sign of weakness. So, card is emitting a constant beeping, denoting there’s something that needs attention; solution? To remove the on-board speaker that’s soldered to the card, obviously.

Now that card has reached the inevitable state of not working at all, the fact that the drives it controlled contained some 200GB of important data is suddenly brought into stark clarity.

And it’s at this point that I have a good, long, evil laugh.
