Memory of music

Some songs are general-purpose listening, but some are indelibly paired with a particular moment in time. “In a Little While” by Uncle Kracker is one of the latter, and no matter how many times I listen to it, whenever it comes on I’m back sitting in the sawdust in the barn at the Smith ranger station, surrounded by new and old friends, buzzing a bit on the beer dispensed by a pourmaster who’s far drunker than anyone he’s serving, watching a slideshow of the day’s work.

This song and this moment will never be redefined to me.
