Hippie rant

Posted: July 18, 2005 in Uncategorized

Now, mind you, I’ve known plenty of hippie types growing up, and there are plenty who, while smelly, are still responsible while they enjoy their summer. But this article about out-of-town Country Fair goers really pisses me off. Specifically for these two quotes:

“I can recognize them by their California food stamp card,” Blum said.

In past years the crush of visitors who’ve come to town for the Oregon Country Fair and stuck around afterward occasionally have caused problems for food banks and other social services organizations.

How can you be so parasitic on a community you profess to love and not feel like a total tool? Maybe because we seem to practically ask these people to come and leech off of us. I don’t pay taxes so Sunflower and Moondust can live off me while they hit the summer festival circuit.

having been on foodstamps and a gov grant in a time of dier need, i most definatly agree. living on the system should not be possible for a long period of time. it should be a hand up, out of a desperate situation. not a life style. it makes me both sad and angry that people feel so entitled to something they have not earned. I know there are exceptions and i know not everyone is “like that” but i have seen enough drug dealers getting rich off the systems and slackers “loving the government sponserd ice cream” that i have not a whole lot of tolerance left. yep i was on the system. for 2 months. and in the same situation i would go on the system again. and again i would work my ass off to get off the system as soon as humanly possible.

There’s a big difference between using the system for what it’s intended, and abusing the system. The system is there because it’s needed, and i totally respect those that do,
      however,
Sunflower and Moondust shouldn’t be travelling out of state so that they can abuse the system thats needed for others.

I agree. I know people who have been on it for years and others who get off it right away.

Absolutely. The system is there to help people, not give them a free ride because they don’t feel like providing for themselves.
