Man, it’s been a long time since I was in PDX. November was it? Over 6 months? I missed that town. Oddly enough, we never even made it to downtown the entire weekend, which I believe is a first ever for me. We didn’t even drive through downtown until we were leaving. Unfortunately, the weather once again defied the forecast and decided to rain on us pretty consistantly, so walking around just wasn’t in the cards.

The universe decided to fuck with me a little on Saturday. Coffee stands that don’t take debit cards, freeway construction detours with no warning signs, missed exits… The fates just wanted to slap me around a little before letting our trip get underway. Uneventful driving, a quick trip out to Troutdale for some new Vans, and we just chilled the rest of the day at Erika and Matt’s, Matt and I quickly settling into our routine of shooting pool, talking music, and drinking beer.

We had originally intended to hit the Baghdad for dinner and a show, but a drop-in at a farewell party ended up commanding our night, plying us with food and drinking. Lots of drinking. Sitting in this little bar, one of the countless spots dotting the city, looking at the clientel ebb and flow through the tables, I once again remembered that this was where all the people my age had gone. Living in Eugene, you grow so very accustomed to being surrounded by white conservative 30-something+ families and their sub-18 offspring, you forget there’s another decade’s-worth of people in the middle there.

Sunday’s momentum took a serious hit from the previous night’s drinking. But after a very gradual breakfast scramble, we made the rounds on Hawthorne, and called it a weekend. Somehow the weekend seemed at 50% capacity, but it was a good time nonetheless, and I’ve gots me some kickin new Vans.
