You get back what you put in

This past weekend was my second annual Smith Spring Thing. Put simply, Smith Rock is an incredible place for climbers and sightseers alike. It’s a massive spine of rock jutting out of the otherwise flat or rolling landscape, like a crumpled wad of paper on a sand dune. To spend a weekend there is a remarkable thing, and to spend a day there helping preserve it is not only satisfying to the soul, it’s still plenty of fun.

Part of what really makes this volunteer work as enjoyable as it is are the other volunteers. Almost all climbers to a person, they’re all strong, motivated, and enthusiastic about what they’re doing, because we will all end up using what we’re building, in some cases that same day. Naturally, the free burritos and beer the park feeds the volunteers at the end of the day helps as well…

Volunteer work aside, it was a good time all around, catching up with friends we don’t get to see often enough, laughing and drinking beyond all decency, and generally enjoying ourselves. I certainly look forward to next year.

Meantime, I’ve collected some killer swag since the weekend. Picked up some BD ovals and a polypro tee from REI on sale, finally got an 802.11g router and card for a song from Outpost.com, and my mom once again hooked me up with the finest in kitchen technogadgetry with a Magic Bullet, which will keep me in a steady supply of smoothies and margaritas this summer.

I am fulfilled and refreshed. Even if my hands do still ache from shovelling.
